Hello fine peeps! And welcome to Sunday Circle. This week's discussion is centered around the limn prompt, but really, talk amongst yourselves, because this should be loose and free and we'll let the discussion go where it takes us. Hopefully it will give writers, artists, poets, etc. ideas for the prompt, but also, it will just give us all sheer *glee*. \o/

Date: 2011-08-07 07:03 pm (UTC)I so totally loved the conversation between Lorne and Carson when he found Lorne painting and it gave us a little backstory on Lorne's background (finally!). So sad that the TPTB haven't given us more backstory on Lorne :(

Date: 2011-08-07 07:13 pm (UTC)But, because of what happened, this only the second time I've watched it, and so much OTHER amazing stuff happens in this ep! The conversations between John and Ronon, Teyla and John, Rodney and Ronon, Teyla and Elizabeth, and Elizabeth and the hottie, Carson and everyone!...SO MUCH TALKING HAPPENS! SO it's well worth re-watching, seriously.

Date: 2011-08-07 10:58 pm (UTC)I have, as we all do...a love/hate relationship with this episode. It has so many wonderful moments but when Carson died...I sat in total shock for a few seconds, then sobbed (sobbed, I tell ya) for an hour. I was so pissed at Mallozzi and company, then I realized...OMG...Atlantis was more than a TV show...these people had become real to me(well..as real as fictional characters can be, according to my 'therapist').
However, this episode did give us Sheppard and Lorne in dress blues...nummy...there is that.

Date: 2011-08-07 07:49 pm (UTC)yes, I do love that about Lorne in Written by the Victors. I loved that he defused a potentially explosive situation by walking that fine line, and then paid the price for it so nobly. <3

Date: 2011-08-07 08:11 pm (UTC)For me, this episode containers a deeper lesson that all of us could apply in our own lives. If you look at Carson, wandering from friend to friend looking for someone to hang out with, he seems almost desperate in his desire for companionship. And if you look at his friends, they almost take for granted that he will find someone else to hang out with.
The lesson that I walked away from was that we should never take anything in life for granted, for it can be snatched away in an instant. I've learned that lesson in my personal life in a very intimate and painful way.
My husband passed away quite suddenly and unexpectedly two years ago. It was absolutely devastating. The first time I watched Sunday, it was before Jade died. The second time was a few months after his death. It was like losing Jade all over again in that I could see all the little details of life and how people take each other for granted and make assumptions about the future.
Carson has always been a favorite character of mine so SGA really changed when TPTB killed him off. I actually stopped watching the show for awhile because I really didn't like the direction it was taking in seasons 4 and 5 (but that's a discussion for another day).
I'd also like to give a thank you for starting this community. There has been a dearth of good SGA writing lately and its nice to have an active community to fill the void.

Date: 2011-08-07 08:32 pm (UTC)I, too, really resented them killing Carson off. I had no warning about it at all, and I remember being horribly shocked. I didn't watch the episode again until yesterday.
I'm so glad you are enjoying the community and I hope you will join in and perhaps write us a Carson story. :)))

OTOH, you have John asking if Ronon's dating anyone, "or a man?" in a completely casual way, revealing he's not homophobic and opening up the possibility he might be interested, and yet when Ronon asks him about him and Teyla John gets a very speculative look...
This is totally why I bi John. I don't have the heart to make him straight het--there is obviously tons of canon for him to be het--but him being interested in whether Ronon is seeing a guy...? hmmm. and, of course, there's the chemistry they have together.
John and Rodney have a different sort of chemistry, which is why I love pairing the two of them together, but Ronon and John have a physical chemistry that's off the map sometimes.
John in dress uniform
oh my. :) I might have taken a *few* snaps.
Musical inspiration
Date: 2011-08-07 10:39 pm (UTC)This song (http://www.mediafire.com/?p16usob852tdgcq) by Josh Ritter isn't all John--it reminds me of some of the reasons I love Atlantis and everyone on it best AND it fits this week's prompt really well (I think!).
"If there's a book of jubilations/ We'll have to write it for ourselves" is just SO SO SO SGA to me. It's a very "we have to write our own story, if we want one that doesn't suck" which, of course, it also incredibly fandom. I <3 that sentiment entirely.
And then using the "illuminate" definition of limn, there's "So if you got a light, hold it high for me" and really, the whole song is about that contrast between light and dark and agency and helplessness.
Ok, enough rambling from me. Anyone else inspired by a particular lyric or the feel of a song or artist?
Re: Musical inspiration
Date: 2011-08-07 11:16 pm (UTC)One is Changing Channels by Jimmy Buffett....
There's an island in the ocean
Where the people stay in motion
Somewhere on the old gulf stream
Do they live or did I dream
Chorus:
They were changing channels
Waitin' for their sails to fill
They'll be changing channels
Always will
The other is one of my top three favorite songs...it Par Avion by Mike and the Mechanics...from the 80's
Another day has passed me by
And there's an island in the sun
To see me through
Another day in paradise
But there's no reason, there's no rhyme
Without you
I know it's the simple island in the sun but the lyrics of both songs seem to resonate with Atlantis.... I also can't get Sheppard out of my head when hearing Smooth Operator by Sade...all these songs on my Ipod and I have worn them out.
Hmmm...maybe I just can't get Sheppard out of my head...that could be the problem.....

I have a song I wish I could vid for the show, but I don't want to say it out loud because maybe someday I will?
