esteefee: A golden haired, green-eyed Little Fuzzy from the book by H. Beam Piper (conversion)
[personal profile] esteefee posting in [community profile] sga_saturday

Hello fine peeps! And welcome to Sunday Circle. This week's discussion is centered around the limn prompt, but really, talk amongst yourselves, because this should be loose and free and we'll let the discussion go where it takes us. Hopefully it will give writers, artists, poets, etc. ideas for the prompt, but also, it will just give us all sheer *glee*. \o/

I enjoyed reading the running commentary you've done on each picture and to my surprise, I found myself smiling at your commentary instead of going teary at the mention of 'Sunday' - it's one episode I might not watch many times compared to the other episodes I've watched so many times!

I so totally loved the conversation between Lorne and Carson when he found Lorne painting and it gave us a little backstory on Lorne's background (finally!). So sad that the TPTB haven't given us more backstory on Lorne :(

To think, if only Beckett hadn't been so afraid of catching Dr Biro's cooties, he would have survived.

Oh, this episode. I loved the "look, everyone has hobbies!" part. But I haaaaaaaaated the "Elizabeth can't date/have a life because then exploding tumors" part. (Also, exploding tumors in general.)

The pic spam is a hoot...love, love, love it!!! Your comments were priceless.

I have, as we all do...a love/hate relationship with this episode. It has so many wonderful moments but when Carson died...I sat in total shock for a few seconds, then sobbed (sobbed, I tell ya) for an hour. I was so pissed at Mallozzi and company, then I realized...OMG...Atlantis was more than a TV show...these people had become real to me(well..as real as fictional characters can be, according to my 'therapist').

However, this episode did give us Sheppard and Lorne in dress blues...nummy...there is that.

I think I know what I want for this week's entry, but I'm waiting on a confab between me and [livejournal.com profile] elderwitty. Then again, of the two ideas I have in my head, we'll probably do something totally out of left field. :)

That made me remember - I've never liked Lorne more than in Speranza's "Written By The Victors". Because he goes back and he faces the music and he's so damn brave and doesn't say a bad word about his friends who stayed on Atlantis. IDK. I just loved it.

And now I might have an idea for the prompt... :)

I've only watched this episode twice. I loved the little side conversations and the insights into the expedition member's off duty lives. I agree that Carson could have gone fishing by himself, but its not about the fishing. Its about the companionship away from the job, crises and daily grind.

For me, this episode containers a deeper lesson that all of us could apply in our own lives. If you look at Carson, wandering from friend to friend looking for someone to hang out with, he seems almost desperate in his desire for companionship. And if you look at his friends, they almost take for granted that he will find someone else to hang out with.

The lesson that I walked away from was that we should never take anything in life for granted, for it can be snatched away in an instant. I've learned that lesson in my personal life in a very intimate and painful way.

My husband passed away quite suddenly and unexpectedly two years ago. It was absolutely devastating. The first time I watched Sunday, it was before Jade died. The second time was a few months after his death. It was like losing Jade all over again in that I could see all the little details of life and how people take each other for granted and make assumptions about the future.

Carson has always been a favorite character of mine so SGA really changed when TPTB killed him off. I actually stopped watching the show for awhile because I really didn't like the direction it was taking in seasons 4 and 5 (but that's a discussion for another day).

I'd also like to give a thank you for starting this community. There has been a dearth of good SGA writing lately and its nice to have an active community to fill the void.

So sorry for your loss, gategrrl. It is sad that there times when it takes tragedies to allow us to realize we are taking each for granted.

I, too, am glad for this wonderful comm, so that we can keep our favorite characters with us.

Take care.

I have very mixed feelings about this episode. One the one hand you have John and Ronon playing silly games and, you know, bonding over beer cans and omigod John reveals he was once married and quizzes Ronon about his sexual preferences (just *ask* him, dammit. John. He'll probably say yes) and John in dress uniform... John in dress uniform... John in dress uniform... John in dress un...

And on the other hand, *exploding Ancient tumours*. I mean! Really?

Musical inspiration

Sometimes I hear a song and think "that is SO John Sheppard." I don't think I'm alone in this?

This song (http://www.mediafire.com/?p16usob852tdgcq) by Josh Ritter isn't all John--it reminds me of some of the reasons I love Atlantis and everyone on it best AND it fits this week's prompt really well (I think!).

"If there's a book of jubilations/ We'll have to write it for ourselves" is just SO SO SO SGA to me. It's a very "we have to write our own story, if we want one that doesn't suck" which, of course, it also incredibly fandom. I <3 that sentiment entirely.

And then using the "illuminate" definition of limn, there's "So if you got a light, hold it high for me" and really, the whole song is about that contrast between light and dark and agency and helplessness.

Ok, enough rambling from me. Anyone else inspired by a particular lyric or the feel of a song or artist?

There are two songs that I can't hear now and not think of Atlantis in one and Atlantis and Sheppard in the other...

One is Changing Channels by Jimmy Buffett....

There's an island in the ocean
Where the people stay in motion
Somewhere on the old gulf stream
Do they live or did I dream

Chorus:
They were changing channels
Waitin' for their sails to fill
They'll be changing channels
Always will

The other is one of my top three favorite songs...it Par Avion by Mike and the Mechanics...from the 80's

Another day has passed me by
And there's an island in the sun
To see me through
Another day in paradise
But there's no reason, there's no rhyme
Without you

I know it's the simple island in the sun but the lyrics of both songs seem to resonate with Atlantis.... I also can't get Sheppard out of my head when hearing Smooth Operator by Sade...all these songs on my Ipod and I have worn them out.

Hmmm...maybe I just can't get Sheppard out of my head...that could be the problem.....
