Hello fine peeps! And welcome to Sunday Circle. This week's discussion is centered around the limn prompt, but really, talk amongst yourselves, because this should be loose and free and we'll let the discussion go where it takes us. Hopefully it will give writers, artists, poets, etc. ideas for the prompt, but also, it will just give us all sheer *glee*. \o/

Him ditching Biro really didn't endear him to me. So, she was a little over-exited and appeared to be pretty socially awkward, but the man's friends with Rodney. I'm having a hard time understanding why he couldn't handle her, or - if she's truly the freak he makes her out to be - why he couldn't go on his damn fishing trip alone. He calls it "the sport of kings," and I know a few men who loves fishing, and they like the sport enough to go fish all on their lonesome.

The thing that kills me about fishing is it's supposed to be a quiet, contemplative sport. If you talk a lot you "scare the fish away." So why Carson would want to force Rodney along...well, I can understand wanting to share something you love with your friend, but there are certain things I recognize I can't do. I adore baseball, but I don't drag my ballet-loving friend Samuel to the ballgame. He would just wince and squirm every time they started blasting Journey from the loud speakers.

Oh yes, there's that too. I would be willing to buy that fishing was just a cover for him wanting to spend time with his BFF Rodney, but then why did he go around asking everyone else in the world if they wanted to go with him instead once Rodney declined? I can only assume that TPTB don't fish and don't know anyone who does.

And as you say, if he wanted to spend time with Rodney, maybe he should have chosen an activity they both could enjoy. Like whale watching. ;)

Carson is lonely? He's obviously a workaholic, from what Cole implied. This was his first day off in forever. He wanted to spend time with *someone*, is the impression I got. But instead of altering his fishing plan to just join in on someone else's plans (e.g., the true sport of Scottish kings, golf, ;) he was hell-bent on fishing with someone.

It's actually pretty revealing about his character. He's O/C. Which you sort of have to be to be a geneticist and bio-engineer, I think.

Oh, also something revealed in this ep: he was Chief of Surgery. I've seen it mentioned in fics that he *wasn't* a trauma surgeon or even a good surgeon, but he must be a pretty damned good one to be made Chief of Surgery, which is the point he makes to the other doc. (I have to look up her character name.)

I think that's a piece of fanon that has completely passed me by. I guess that would explain why, when Keller needed surgery, they called him in (it still doesn't explain why they haven't more than one competent surgeon at a time on Atlantis, but what can you do).

Yeah, Rodney would be bored to tears fishing, unless perhaps they had one of those sonic fish-finder things that he could amuse himself by dismantling/improving.

hahahah. Rodney would finish with an "Ahah!" and press a button and all these gigantic fish would pop up to the surface, and Carson would wince and sigh and complain how unsporting it was!!!

I loved, btw, how she interrupted him to apologize for interrupting him. Oh, *Biro*, you are the geek girl of my heart. I loved her haircut, too. Did you read the kinkmeme fill with her and John in the VR? It was my favorite VR porn ever, ever. So well done.

I adore Biro. That minute we got made me want more. I still think it's a crying shame that she didn't become the CMO when Carson went splooey. Keller could still have been a recurring character if they were that desperate for eye candy for the male viewers, but we'd have Biro as well. There's such a shortage of genuinely quirky and maladjusted female characters who aren't played by picture perfect women on TV. We needed Biro!

That kink meme fill is one of my favourites. It was exactly how I'd always pictured Biro. John finding her fun to be with makes perfect sense too. I'd happily read tons of Biro/Sheppard fic. :3

TV needs female characters like that. I'm so freakin' tired of cookie cutter perfection. How come men get to be all quirky and awkward and weird?

I don't often get into het (it is written so tame compared to my taste, and that might be part of the same above problem) but that one was awesome.

Exactly. Rodney can be who he is, an average looking middle-aged socially mal-adjusted geek, and still be the hero of a show and be rewarded with the woman of his dreams, but someone like Dr Biro or Dr Novak (another character I would have loved to see more of) are somehow too scary to get more than a couple of minutes worth of screen time. :/

I like het in theory, but way too often het changes the characters in ways that slash don't. I like my John Sheppard to be bad-ass and affable and a little goofy, and not turn into Edward Cullen just because he's paired with a woman instead of a man. There is definitely good het around, but a lot of the time, the man's personality will be rewritten so he fits into the mould of 'love interest', and I hate that.

ETA: That's not to say that there's not a lot of good SGA het around, or that slash doesn't come with its own share of issues.
