esteefee: A golden haired, green-eyed Little Fuzzy from the book by H. Beam Piper (conversion)
[personal profile] esteefee posting in [community profile] sga_saturday

Hello fine peeps! And welcome to Sunday Circle. This week's discussion is centered around the limn prompt, but really, talk amongst yourselves, because this should be loose and free and we'll let the discussion go where it takes us. Hopefully it will give writers, artists, poets, etc. ideas for the prompt, but also, it will just give us all sheer *glee*. \o/

Musical inspiration

Sometimes I hear a song and think "that is SO John Sheppard." I don't think I'm alone in this?

This song (http://www.mediafire.com/?p16usob852tdgcq) by Josh Ritter isn't all John--it reminds me of some of the reasons I love Atlantis and everyone on it best AND it fits this week's prompt really well (I think!).

"If there's a book of jubilations/ We'll have to write it for ourselves" is just SO SO SO SGA to me. It's a very "we have to write our own story, if we want one that doesn't suck" which, of course, it also incredibly fandom. I <3 that sentiment entirely.

And then using the "illuminate" definition of limn, there's "So if you got a light, hold it high for me" and really, the whole song is about that contrast between light and dark and agency and helplessness.

Ok, enough rambling from me. Anyone else inspired by a particular lyric or the feel of a song or artist?

There are two songs that I can't hear now and not think of Atlantis in one and Atlantis and Sheppard in the other...

One is Changing Channels by Jimmy Buffett....

There's an island in the ocean
Where the people stay in motion
Somewhere on the old gulf stream
Do they live or did I dream

Chorus:
They were changing channels
Waitin' for their sails to fill
They'll be changing channels
Always will

The other is one of my top three favorite songs...it Par Avion by Mike and the Mechanics...from the 80's

Another day has passed me by
And there's an island in the sun
To see me through
Another day in paradise
But there's no reason, there's no rhyme
Without you

I know it's the simple island in the sun but the lyrics of both songs seem to resonate with Atlantis.... I also can't get Sheppard out of my head when hearing Smooth Operator by Sade...all these songs on my Ipod and I have worn them out.

Hmmm...maybe I just can't get Sheppard out of my head...that could be the problem.....

TOTALLY a big part of the problem. Well, I say "problem." ;)

I don't know those two songs but I can totally see the connection. They both have just a touch of melancholy or longing that I often associate with SGA, as well as the island imagery!

A good "problem"....indeed.

Interesting that you picked up on the melancholy tone from the words, the music is quite melancholy, as well. Both beautiful ballads.

There's a couple of Bruce Springsteen songs that I associate with SGA and especially with John, Ronon, and Carson.

One is Nothing Man and it usually gets me thinking about how John downplays his contributions to Atlantis and the other is The Wrestler from the movie of the same name. That one reminds me of how people hide their private pain behind a mask because they recognize that their pain is too hard for other people to bear so they keep it locked away. Anytime I hear this song I think about the decisions John and Ronon and Carson have made that shape them into the men they've become. We really are a product of our decisions and the consequences they bring.

I love Springstein and Nothing Man is perfect for John, and the Wrestler is a great one as well.

You are so right...we are a product of the decisions we make and and the consequences.

There are so many songs that remind me of John Sheppard, but one that really is perfect is George Harrison's Dark Horse. If I had any talent I'd have made an SGA Fan-Vid using this as the sound- track. Every time I hear the first two lines of the chorus I see him running in the rain in "Eye of the storm" he is on a dark racecourse as he kills all those Gennii. And "Cool Jerk" I just love that description and it's so John to me!!!

It's one of those songs that creep up on you I think, I don't have the album or anything, and I found it on youtube while searching for something else.

Oh, yes, that's a good one! Also one I didn't know, but I can totally see it. I like how the dark lyrics contrast with the lighter, more upbeat sounding music too--very Sheppardian contrast there.

I think the upbeat music and contrast of darker lyrics make it declciously sinister. I also love how George's voice sounds when he sings the song because it feels like it could be Shepard's voice in his own head, the upbeat tune keeps him moving and moving, but the lyrics those are the things he won't say about himself outloud.

Totally missed this comment earlier!

Looked up the lyrics, and yes, Nothing Man is TOTALLY a John Sheppard song. Oh man.

"Around here, everybody acts the same/Around here, everybody acts like nothing’s changed." If that's not a shout out to "The Return" I don't know what is.

I have about five that I'd love to see, but I know I'll never do it because my talents do not lie in that direction at all!

But you totally should if you think you can
