Waking up to find that he was trapped was not John's favourite way to start the day. He would much rather be waking up with Carson wrapped around him. The unassuming Scottish doctor was a bit like an octopus when he slept, with his arms and legs thrust out in all directions. It had taken John a while to get used to but now he had he found it hard to sleep without that bodily contact.
This morning the only body he could possibly make contact with was Rodney.
"I'm not exactly overjoyed by our situation either, Major."
"You're the one who stranded us here." John stood up. He supposed he should be grateful that the Jumper was in one piece.
"You would have preferred the vacuum of space?" Rodney snapped as he tore the wrapper from an energy bar and crammed it into his mouth.
"I'd like to be back on Atlantis. You got any more of those?"
"That was the last one." Rodney brushed crumbs from his hands. "But at least now I'll have the energy to fix this little problem."
"That you caused." John strode into the forward section of the Jumper and sat down. This was the last place he wanted to be. So instead he settled down to think about Carson. He was very much afraid that he was falling in love with him. Which, given that they had been together such a short time, was nothing short of ridiculous. Did Carson feel the same way? John probably should ask him but what would happen if Carson said no, that he wasn't in love with John?
"How are you getting on?" John called back to Rodney. He was hungry and John dug into his pocket hoping to find something to eat. Nothing. "McKay?"
"You really ought to work on learning patience, Major."
"Because you're such a patient person." He watched as Rodney flipped open yet another control panel and then frowned at the tablet he was holding.
"This could take a while." Rodney glanced up at John. "Maybe we could have a chat."
"Chat?" John narrowed his eyes. "You've never wanted to chat before."
"Now I want to chat. It'll help me concentrate."
John couldn't envisage any universe in which chatting could possibly be said to be an aid to concentration but since Rodney was his only way of getting the Jumper flying again he decided to humour him. "What shall we talk about? How about football?"
Rodney shook his head. "While I'm sure you could talk for hours on that subject I can't."
John raised an eyebrow. Was Rodney actually admitting to not knowing something? For now he made the decision not to mention it. Again with the needing Rodney if he's going to have any chance of seeing Atlantis again.
"Then what would you like to talk about?"
Rodney glanced towards him and scowled. "How about we discuss your relationship with Carson?"
"No." John put his foot down very firmly on that idea.
"I take it you two have advanced beyond the chaste kissing and holding hand stage."
John could feel himself flushing red. "I'm not really sure that's any of your concern."
"Carson’s my friend," Rodney stated bluntly as though that made his interference okay. "You two have had sex?"
There was no way in hell that John was going to answer that question. "Since Carson's your friend why don't you ask him?"
"I did." Again with the bluntness. "He blushed and ummed and ahhed and then practically fell over his own feet to get away from me."
John smiled as he pictured the scene in his mind.
"He did tell me one thing though." Rodney put down the tablet and turned to face John, who had a sudden urge to put his hands over his ears. "He told me he was in love with you but that he was fairly sure you didn't feel the same way."
"That's two things," John pointed out. His heart was beating double time in his chest. Was what Rodney had just said the truth? It couldn't possibly be. "What did you say?"
"That he should talk to you. Given that we're having this conversation he obviously didn't follow my advice." Rodney glared at him, as though Carson's failure was his fault. "Why haven't you?"
"Stop being cryptic, Rodney."
"You've had ample opportunity to tell Carson how you feel, so why haven't you?"
John considered the question. "Because it wouldn't be fair on him. I doubt you've noticed but dating opportunities out here are somewhat limited."
"You're afraid Carson's settling for you?" Rodney almost laughed. He wasn't about to tell John how sexy he was. Mind you he wasn't about to tell anyone. Rodney knew full well that there were some things he should keep to himself.
"No," John said in the tone of voice that implied the opposite. "I'm not afraid of that."
Rodney sighed. He was pretty sure that from here on out he needed to make a resolution to stay out of other people's romantic entanglements. But Carson had seemed so downhearted and Rodney, despite what people might think of him, did care about his friends.
It was sweet really. The two men being so unsure of each other but also slightly annoying.
"Carson loves you." Rodney fixed John with a glare. Time to bring an end to this. He was after all wasting precious time. "You love him. When we get back to Atlantis talk to him."
John raised a eyebrow. "If we get back to Atlantis."
"Oh." Rodney stood up and pushed the panel above his head closed. "There's nothing wrong with the Jumper. We can go now if you want."
"Rodney!"
John was on his feet and for a moment Rodney wondered if perhaps this time he had gone too far.
