Title: Durb is not a Word
Author/artist: [livejournal.com profile] mific
Wordcount: 2260
Rating: NC-17
Pairing: McKay/Sheppard
Summary: In which John and Rodney play Scrabble. And cheat like bastards.
Warnings: None.
Notes: For the sga_saturday prompt "Word". This was fun to write – I started with a generic Scrabble game image, edited it in photoshop to add a McShep flavor and then wrote the fic based almost entirely on how the board was arranged in the pic. In the process I learned a few interesting words. I'm not a Scrabble buff so if any of the following breaks the rules of the game, we'll just blame John and Rodney. Big thanks to [livejournal.com profile] busaikko for a quick beta read. Set a little after Sunday.
ETA: Now with an extra turn by John to fix the fact that Rodney got carried away and had two goes at one point - thanks to [livejournal.com profile] esteefee, chief Scrabble beta, for spotting the continuity error. :)

This week, the word is....word. In honor of Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys and all of the awesome words he and others have contributed to our lives. This one has about a million definitions, but below are included just a few. I'm finding 6 and 12 particularly inspiring. What about you guys?

word
noun
1. a unit of language, consisting of one or more spoken sounds or their written representation, that functions as a principal carrier of meaning. Words are composed of one or more morphemes and are either the smallest units susceptible of independent use or consist of two or three such units combined under certain linking conditions, as with the loss of primary accent that distinguishes blackbird from black bird. Words are usually separated by spaces in writing, and are distinguished phonologically, as by accent, in many languages.
2. (used in combination with the first letter of an offensive or unmentionable word, the first letter being lowercase or uppercase, with or without a following hyphen): My mom married at 20, and she mentions the m-word every time I meet someone she thinks is eligible. See also f-word, n-word.
3. words,
a. speech or talk: to express one's emotion in words; Words mean little when action is called for.
b. the text or lyrics of a song as distinguished from the music.
c. contentious or angry speech; a quarrel: We had words and she walked out on me.
4. a short talk or conversation: Marston, I'd like a word with you.
5. an expression or utterance: a word of warning.
6. warrant, assurance, or promise: I give you my word I'll be there.
7. news; tidings; information: We received word of his death.
8. a verbal signal, as a password, watchword, or countersign.
9. an authoritative utterance, or command: His word was law.
10. also called machine word. Computers . a string of bits, characters, or bytes treated as a single entity by a computer, particularly for numeric purposes.
11. ( initial capital letter ) Also called the Word, the Word of God.
a. the Scriptures; the Bible.
b. the Logos.
c. the message of the gospel of Christ.
12. a proverb or motto.

ANNOUCEMENT/REMINDER: Amnesty week is coming up soon (let's just say week 52 in honor of our first anniversary!!), so if you have any half-finished stories or a plot bunny you wanted to follow up on, or just want to puruse the now 47 weeks worth of prompts and be inspired to write a new story, please do!!
