They were green, which wasn't particularly off-putting in and of itself. Though a bit fatter, and rounder, they could also pass for an earth banana, more or less, which were also sometimes green. The appeal was obvious for a mission starved for reminders of home, even if it was alien fruit that got gradually a concerning shade of blue, instead of yellow. It had been a near city wide celebration when preliminary testing showed them safe for human consumption.
For the most part, it was fine, aside from somehow no one bothering to name the things. It was like if someone called them anything but a banana, it would break some sort of spell that gave them a bit of home to hold on to. Even if said “bananas” tasted like melon bread and were chewy. Or so Rodney was told. He refused to try them.
It wasn't because of Rodney's eight billion allergies, hypochondria, or just general Rodney-ness, either. He'd been watching. Everyone else seemed to eat a “banana” here and there, and that was it, they just went on with their days, but not John. He was up to a twelve a day habit, that Rodney knew of. He had caught him hiding them. No one else seemed concerned, which Rodney found frustrating and baffling.
John's personality changes were what concerned Rodney the most. It was hard to describe. His slouch had turned into more of an ooze. Laid back was an understatement. The worst part was how infuriatingly happy and unconcerned he was all the time. It was no longer an outer shell, it had permeated his entire being. While Rodney was mostly concerned about John, he was also concerned about if something actually happened to the city or out in the field. He might be critical of the military, but he also liked his bacon being saved when shit hit the fan.
He'd had enough! John was sitting in front of him, eyes glazed over and grunting around a large mouthful of blue banana. It was an important briefing. Lives could be in danger, if the timing was off. More importantly, Rodney was talking! He slapped the “banana” out of John's hand. The reaction was instantaneous. John stood, his facial expression darkened in a way Rodney hadn't seen in ages. The entire city turned off at once.
Rodney may have miscalculated.
