If I were 'the survivor'. other cultures could ask me about the things *I* know: the types of medicine I worked in, how I do some arts and crafts, how my grandmother canned peaches and made pot roast, how to plant peas, etc. I know the basics of how a steam engine works, but I couldn't build one. I know the theory behind a lot of different things because I've lived as long as I have, but can I explain it in such a way another different culture could make sense of it?
I don't know.
So many times we see 'alien cultures' in SF&F books, movies, shows as simply slightly different Earth cultures and they aren't. They are living and breathing entities of their own.
